With so many factors to consider combined with the overwhelming amount of information out there, it’s no wonder you aren’t sure which flooring is right for your family.

We’ll help you easily decide the best fit while helping you focus on what matters most – having a floor that you are proud of and most comfortable with.

What to consider when choosing the best flooring for families with kids and pets

Before diving into the best flooring solutions possible, we’re sure you want something that will stand the test of time. It will be able to handle the jumps, bumps, scrapes, and everyday traffic that a typical family brings.

Make sure you take into consideration the dynamics of your family now and in the future. Never decide on a floor that won’t accommodate this important facet.

It’s important to choose based on the kind of family you have. Ask yourself questions such as:

  • What kind of look do I prefer?
  • What comfort level does the floor material offer?
  • Is it durable and how long will it last?
  • What level of maintenance is involved?
  • What kind of resistance does it offer?

The answers to these questions will ensure that you end up with a floor that is perfect for your family!

Best flooring options for families with kids and pets

Carpet

Being one of the most soft and comfortable solutions, carpet is almost always the first go-to flooring option for families, and rightfully so. It’s ideal for families with young children and just about any pet.

Carpets are not ideal for pets who are still house-training nor for young children to eat or drink on. With this in mind, consider putting carpet in the bedrooms, hallways, and family room.

Laminate

Laminate is great for families with young children and less active pets. It’s easy to clean and can be pretty cost-effective with versatile wood and tile look-alike options.

If you have pets with longer nails, you can expect a scratch or two, but overall, laminate is a reliable option for kitchens, basements, hallways, and the living room.

Tile

If you’re looking for something that can mesh with just about any decor style, then tile is something to consider. It comes in a variety of finishes such as porcelain, marble, ceramic, and stone. It’s best for kids and pets of all ages mainly due to its scratch and water resistant properties.

Because this type of flooring isn’t ideal for laying or playing on, most homeowners choose to have it laid in the basement, bathroom, and kitchen.

Hardwood

Another flooring option most commonly found in homes, next to carpet, is hardwood. If you have small children and young, active pets, then hardwood may be something to hold off on.

However, for families with older children and pets, you’ll most likely enjoy this floor much longer. They also make for an ideal investment due to their ability to be refinished several times. Most families choose to lay hardwood in bedrooms, hallways, and living rooms.

Cork

Least heard of, but definitely worth considering, is a cork floor. This option is best for families with toddlers and family members with allergies. Cork is starting to make its way to the top of the lists due to their eco-friendly abilities and its comfortability.

Although it’s not ideal for the entire home (especially one with heavy furniture), you will enjoy its unique touch in spaces like your child’s playroom.

As you navigate finding the perfect floor solutions for your family, keep these things in mind and choose wisely. Overall, comfort and durability are key!
