Garage Storage Ideas to Get Your Garage Back

1. Put The Walls To Work

You can do more than just hang something on those walls. Rather then just hang hooks, look for ways to really get creative with that space. Peg Boards, shelving, and mounted cabinets are great ways to put those walls to work.

2. Use the Ceiling for more Space

Even if your garage doesn’t have an overhead storage space, doesn’t mean you can’t use that space. Look into a ceiling bike rack, or something similar to make sure you’re not wasing any space.

3. Break out the Peg Board

Peg board is a great way to get most out of your garage. Peg board is super easy to install, and you can use simple hooks to create custom spots for every tool you have.

This garage organization idea can look a bit generic, so bust out that spray paint to customize your peg board.

4. Adding Hooks is a Great Garage Storage Idea

Why stop at peg board hook? Put hooks everywhere you possible can. Edge of a shelf? Hook. Side of your work bench? Hook.

If there is a place to put a hook, add one. The more places you have to put stuff, the less the chance it ends up on the ground.

5. Have a Trash Can

This one seems like common sense, but it really is easy to overlook. A kitchen without a trash can seems crazy, but a lot of people never think to add a trash can to their garage.

6. Reuse Old Furniture

Do you have an old cabinet that you’re planning to get rid of? Don’t! Put it to work as storage in your garage. Something doesn’t have to be pretty to help you organize your garage.

7. Use Wall Organizers as Garage Storage

Don’t let any space go to waste. A few well-placed wall organizers can get a lot of stuff off of the floor, and really open up your garage.

8. Hang Bikes

Bikes belong in the garage, no questions. But, bikes are unruly and take up a ton of space. They are a garage organization nightmare.

So how do you solve this problem? Remove the bike from the equation by hanging it from the ceiling and getting it out of your way.

9. Add Pull Down Lighting

Clutter hides in the dark. Adding some extra light to your space can go a long way towards making your garage feel a lot more organized.

10. Don’t Forget To Add Color

Garages do not have to be drab. A little bit of color can make your garage actually feel like a usable space. No need to paint your entire garage orange though. You can easily add a bit of color by painting your cabinet doors or simply using bright colored storage containers.

11. A Tool Tower Is Your Friend

Get your tools off of the floor with a tool tower. A tool tower is a simple to keep your tools organized and in good shape.

12. Don’t Ignore The Corners

There is a lot of usable space hiding in the corners of your garage. Installing a corner cabinet or shelf can quickly add a bunch of storage space.

13. Don’t Let Sports Gear Get Crowded

Especially if you have kids, it’s easy to end up with a bunch of unused sports gear. Weather it is balls, clubs, or bats these unruly pieces need a home. A specialized storage stand can help you quickly organize your garage.

14. Hide The Ladder

Ladders take up a ton of space, so hide them by either slotting them behind the work bench or hanging them from the ceiling.

15. Hang Your Big Tools

Not all tools belong in the cabinets. Rather than taking up valuable cabinet space with your bigger tools, try hanging them using a simple peg board.

16. Use Outdoor Space to Free Up Garage Storage

Has your garage become your catch all space? Don’t worry, you’re not alone, but it’s time to make a change. If you have things like gardening tools hanging out in your garage, look at investing in an outdoor storage cabinet to get the stuff out of your limited space.

17. Number The Bins

Once something goes in a bin, it’s easy to lose it forever. Remedy this by numbering each bin, and keeping an index hung somewhere in plain sight. This both makes it easier to find something when you need it, and reminds you of everything you’ve go stored away.

18. Don’t Forget to Clean

Another common sense thing that is often overlooked. You can’t just organize and hope you will suddenly have a beautiful garage. If you want a pristine space, you also need to actually clean the space as well.

19. Magnets Are Your Friend

Any where that there is metal in your garage is potential storage space. Pop a magnet anywhere you can, and hang those screw drivers and other little bits and bobs.

20. Use Mason Jars to Collect Little Bits

Mason jars are a great way to keep track of all of those little screws, bolts, nuts, etc that you just had to hold on to because you may need it some day.

    You brought up a good point regarding the corners in a garage and how you can install extra closets there to make use of the space. After getting my son his own car, we’ve been noticing that our large garage has ended up becoming busier with more tools and parts. To make everything orderly, I’ll take your advice and look for a garage storage solutions contractor that can help us install some closets in those empty corners.
